The first stretch of our Everest trek leads from the landing strip in Lukla to the town of Namche Bazaar. We’ve dubbed it the “Mani Trail” for the very impressive boulders that the Sherpas have carved with Tibetan prayer texts. (Remember mani walls and mani stones.)
Clearly the tourist infrastructure in the Everest region is on a much larger scale than the Annapurna Circuit; luckily, we are trekking very late in the season, so we have the trails pretty much to ourselves. Although the local villages have grown into collections of trekking lodges and somewhat lack the atmosphere of the villages along the Annapurna circuit, the mountain scenery looks very promising! In the distance we can see what we’re heading into – and it looks great!
