Into Greater Tibet

Prayer Flags and Grasslands

We have finally arrived in Tibet – kind of.

Actually, we are in the Tibetan ethnic regions of Sichuan. Most people don’t realize that the area of what you might call Greater Tibet spills over into the Chinese provinces of Yunan, Sichuan, Qinghai and Gansu. In fact, Greater Tibet constitutes a sizable portion of China – which is one of the reasons why China refuses to discuss Tibetan independence.

Much of our pre-trip research indicated that Tibetan culture and religious freedom is much more alive outside of the Tibetan Autonomous Region (TAR) in the neighboring provinces. For this reason, we have decided to split our Tibet travels between the TAR and Greater Tibet. We’ll keep you updated on how the two compare.
