Crossing Sumbawa

Ugghhh! Well, we intended to make it easy for ourselves, but comfort doesn’t seem to be in Indonesia’s master plan.

Eager to avoid the marathon 26-hour bus from Lombok across Sumbawa to Flores, we did everything in our power to simplify this stretch of Nusa Tenggara on our way east. Attempting to break the bumpy, dusty land-sea voyage into pieces, we ended up instead on a non-stop, three-day exploration of crappy buses, scuzzy hotels and Sumbawa’s extensive lack of information and infrastructure. Schedules seemed tailor-designed to be inconvenient and leave you stranded.
