About Thomas

I was born in 1969 in southern Germany and pretty much lived there until the age of 24. When I was young, I would dream of concerts, new cars, rock stars and popular icons. I wanted what I thought everyone wanted – a stable job, a house with a yard and, perhaps, a pet.
To fulfill my dreams, I started working for a bank but after a few years was getting bored selling retirement plans and so I decided to quit my job and study English in the United States. This was quite a dramatic step for me since I did like a certain routine and felt comfortable in my everyday life. Generally speaking, I hated change. Little did I know that my 5-month trip to the US would be followed by years of traveling and moving from Europe to Africa to North America and back to Europe. Change galore!
Along the way I ended up with a degree in chemistry due to my interest in natural sciences, but my real passion lies in the plant and animal life, particularly in small stuff. I love macro photography because it captures all the details and textures I could ever dream of. To this day, I find it difficult to walk by mushrooms or insects without staring at them and taking way too many pictures.
My childhood plans of living in one place and working for the same company for over 40 years (like my dad) have long been abandoned. Moving around and staying in different parts of the world have made my life a lot more interesting and have taught me one important lesson: change can be good!
