Thomas’ Bug Collection

During our time in Asia, I spent countless hours crawling around through questionable underbrush, turning over rocks, climbing up trees and sifting through leaves just to get a few usable snapshots of interesting bugs. And it was absolutely worth the effort. That’s what I love!

Finally, after almost 6 years, I put together an insect pictorial of my favorite beauties. In case you’re wondering, all of our pictures were taken with a Canon Powershot. Wear and tear in addition to a couple of diving accidents made us go through a whole bunch of new cameras, but we always stuck with the G-series for its excellent macro feature!

These are truly amazing!! I especially like the chubby green one with all his blue bristly spikes!

It’s incredible what you can see when you take a close-up shot of an insect: little heart-shaped feet, bristly fur, reflective armor-like exoskeletons, hairy legs, translucent bodies, intricate patterns, amazing colors and bulgy eyes (often more than two)!

I love this collection, but would soooo love to see more…. I’ll have to check out the Canon G-series. I’d love to have a macro feature. Thanks, Thomas, for sharing your collection!

Stunning, Thomas. If those are “snapshots,” I look forward to seeing your painstakingly composed, serious work.
All hand-held? The biggest trouble I have with macro photography is the wind! Did these just happen to be still days?
Really great work. Ahem … we have some really cool bugs around here too ….

Thanks for the kudos! Evelyn, I will add some more macro shots in the future. And yes, Laurelle, they are all hand-held. I have taken about a hundred times as many photographs. For every great photo, I have about 10 that are blurry for various reasons. First you have the air movement as you already mentioned, then your hands are generally not perfectly still and, above all, most insects are not the passive type. Most of the time I was chasing them while trying to take a reasonable photo.

It’s actually funny that you mentioned the wind. It seems like every time I’m just about ready to take a picture, a gust of wind makes the leaves (and thus the insect) shake violently. I usually wait until it calms down (including my nerves) just to be infuriated again by another gust.

By the way, when we visit you guys, I would love to look for those cool bugs with you!
