Darjeeling

Finally, we’ve moved out of the lowland’s scorching heat and have arrived by toy train in world-famous Darjeeling, Bengal’s former summer capital situated in the Himalayan foothills.

This household-name hill station surrounded by forests and tea estates, is not a secret hideaway though. Buzzing with Indian tourists shopping for Darjeeling tea and pashminas, the city is surprisingly hassle-free and relaxing. Why? Because we are back in Buddhist-dominated India with gentle Tibetan people, colorful monasteries and tall stupas. In fact, Darjeeling derives its name from the former Dorje Ling monastery, which means Place of the Thunderbolt. After having been here for a few day, I get the name.

Darjeeling boasts a breath-taking view of the surrounding Himalayas but because clouds and rain seem to be dominating, we’ve only caught one short glimpse of some icy peaks on our daily walk along Observatory Hill. But I’m not complaining. After the burning heat of the plains, you wouldn’t believe how much we’re enjoying watching the fog and rain move through as we treat ourselves to a piece of Black Forest cake and a cup of Darjeeling tea.
