The Karni Mata Rat Temple

By Tony on May 4, 2008 | 11 Comments »

Video has finally made it to ContemporaryNomad.com! Our video premier had to be good, so we headed down to the famous Karni Mata rat temple in Deshnoke, a village an hour south of Bikaner.

You need to a flashplayer enabled browser to view this YouTube video

It was a rather bizarre experience as you can see by the expressions on our faces. Notice the mother urging her child to touch the rats for luck – yikes! And don’t miss the white rat; seeing it will bring you good luck.

    I utter in disbelief, “WHY?”

    Why? Because.

Actually, I saw this temple on “Ripley’s Believe it or Not” in the late 70s / early 80s and I knew that one day I would have to go.

    It was freaky and fun.

Comically, the inner sanctum was filled with rats, but foreigners were not allowed in!!! However, they did tolerate our peaking through the door. How’s that for insulting… rats yes, foreigners no :)

Great to see some video, and what a choice! Yikes. I can’t believe that Thomas let one nibble on his toe and that you actually gave away a banana. :)

I have to admit, it was a difficult choice. I even stopped short of eating the left-over bananas off the ground ;)

[..YouTube..] For those who would possibly start poking fun at Hinduism based on this, I would just like to say, an ability to venerate life even in the form of vermin shows a great spiritual reverence for nature and life in all things that no other culture has been able to. Humanity needs this if we are to preserve our planet home and the endangered species and habitats of it
