Different Tastes

The food in southern China is incredible! Some of the best meals we have had were in outdoor street markets. The good thing is that you can get anything. The bad thing is that you can get anything. The Chinese themselves often comment that they eat anything that walks, crawls, swims or flies. When asked what dog tastes like, one local answered, “It tastes just like cat.”

Gruesome pic, Tony. In Korea, you have to go to a special section of the market to get dog meat and they always reassured us Meegooks that the dogs were farm-raised for meat and never pets. Have you heard any such disclaimers in China?

Yummy! Makes me want to visit these exotic places just for the food.

This makes me so sad. But, along the same lines, I took my students to the zoo. So many of the guys were pointing at animals and telling me which animals taste the best. You should have seen them in the monkey and reptile house! I had to calm them down.

This reminds me of outdoor meat markets in Athens, Greece: goats, completely skinned, hanging in rows by their hooves with eyeballs, teeth, and tongues lolling out at eye level. Flies buzzing…I was beside myself at first. It’s funny how easy it is to get accostomed to sanitized, pre-cut meats in US grocery stores, conveniently wrapped in styrofoam and cellophane so that we never have to make the mental connection between the living beasts we eat and their muscles that we call meat. “Beef” doesn’t even rhyme with cow; nor does “Pork” sound much like pig. My six year old nephew had no idea that milk and steak came from cows when I asked him. I think this is a sad commentary on “advanced” society. And why should we be surprised that some people eat one animal while other people don’t? What’s to be sad about? (Sorry for the tirade, this picture is quite evocative.)
